PhD Student in Advanced Fiber Optic Communications Systems for Access Networks (m/f/d)
The PhD student will work alongside the Optical Access Networks team in the Huawei Munich Research Center, Optical and Quantum Communications Laboratory. The research will focus on the evolution of optical access networks based on Passive Optical Network Architectures towards transmission speed above 50 Gbps both in downstream and upstream. Going above 50Gpbs will likely require a paradigm shift at the physical layer, from current direct-detection technologies to advanced modulation formats and coherent detection. The fundamental point of this research will be to find a good balance between complexity and cost. The research work will include optical systems simulations and laboratory-based verifications and tests of new algorithms and optical components. It is expected that the research work will result in high profile journal publications and presentations at major conferences.
Your mission
- Research and design modems for optical communication networks with specific application to fiber to the home and access networks
- Experimental demonstration and modelling of fiber optic communication systems for access networks
- Develop new signal processing concepts and architectures
- Work closely with a group of domain experts and researchers in an international & cross-functional Huawei team in Munich and with external academic partners
- Participate in academic conferences, publish and present latest research achievements in conferences or journals, such as OFC, ECOC, JLT, PTL, etc.
Your areas of expertise
- Master`s degree in Electrical, Electronic, Optoelectronic Engineering or related fields
- Hands-on experience and understanding of photonic devices and optical fiber systems characterization setups and methods
- Knowledge of optical or wireless communication systems (modulation, equalization, synchronization, forward error correction)
- Good programming skill in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, C/C++, Matlab
- Experience in fiber optic systems simulation tools (such as VPI, OptSim, Optiwave) is a plus
