Senior Research Engineer – Lightweight Sandbox for Agentic AI

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Research Engineer to join our innovative IAAS team. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in creating systems that augment AI agents with lightweight execution environments for external execution. The goal of these systems is to maximize cloud resource utilization while minimizing latency of each call execution. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to research, prototype, and implement cutting-edge solutions for AI systems. This position requires a blend of deep technical expertise, creative problem-solving, and a passion for pushing the boundaries of systems that enable AI research.

Your mission
- Lead research initiatives focused on designing light weight runtime execution environment for Agentic Workloads.
- Develop prototypes and production-ready implementations of resource efficient AI execution environment.
- Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and stakeholders to integrate AI agents into broader systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Conduct experiments, analyze results, and publish findings in top-tier conferences or journals to contribute to the field of AI Systems.
- Mentor junior team members and provide technical guidance on best practices in the field of Systems for AI.
- Stay abreast of emerging trends in virtualization, operating system, sandbox environment e.g. Docker, WASM and apply them to ongoing projects.
- Evaluate and optimize the performance, scalability, and robustness of AI agents in real-world scenarios using Huawei Cloud.
Your areas of expertise
- Master's or PhD in Computer Science, or a related field, with a focus on System for AI and machine learning or Operating System and Virtualization.
- Familiarity with ML-frameworks e.g. TensorFlow or PyTorch. Familiarity with transformer and large language Models.
- Strong system programming experience. Experience in languages such as C, C++, Rust, golang, Python. Experience in Linux kernel and tool chain
- Demonstrated ability to innovate and conduct independent research, evidenced by publications, patents, or contributions to open-source projects in relevant areas.
- Strong communication skills, with experience presenting technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in modern Agent frameworks e.g. CrewAI, LongGraph, Semantic Kernel, AutoGen…
- Experience in building compound AI systems with familiarity to agentic memory, KV cache optimization and inference software (vllm, llama.cpp etc.)
- Prior experience in a senior or lead role within a research-oriented organization or startup focused on AI technologies.
- Proven track record of working on Virtualization Technologies e.g. Firecracker, Qemu or other sandbox technologies e.g. Containers, WASM, libOS or Unikernels.
- Familiarity with Sandbox Orchestration e.g. Docker, Kubernetes
