Huawei’s German Research Center in Munich (Munich Research Center) is responsible for advanced technical research, architecture evolution design and strategic technical planning. Now we are looking for a

PhD Candidate for NN based image and video compression (m/f/d)

to develop and implement image and video coding NN based algorithms, with the focus on complexity and power consumption aspects. We are looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated PhD candidate who will contribute to the research and development of NN based image and video compression. The PhD candidate has the possibility to attend the international conference and present the developed technologies to the international community.

Your responsibilities:

• Research on innovative algorithms in the field of image/video compression;
• Implement designed algorithm on Smartphone (under supervisor of experienced engineers);
• Optimize NN based algorithms considering complexity and power consumption;
• Generate papers and technical reports if possible.

Our requirements:

Required:

• You have recently completed or will soon complete your master studies in electrical engineering, information technology, computer science, mathematics or physics
• You have a deep interest in the topics related to video processing and artificial intelligent
• You enjoy working in a team and you like to collaborate with researchers to develop creative solutions
• You are fluent in English (written and spoken)
• Understanding for basic principle of NN structure, training and inference (Tensorflow, Pytorch, Keras)
• Good software skills - knowledge of Python or other scripting language experience (bash, perl, ruby), C/C++

Preferred:

• Experience in image or/and video coding standardization;
• Experience in NN signal based processing
• German language is considered as a plus;
• Capability to develop video coding optimization algorithms, targeting overall coding system structural optimization;
• Knowledge and understanding of the existing video coding technologies and standards, such as H.265/HEVC, H.266/VVC, AV1 and reference software (HM, VTM) is considered as a plus.

This is a fixed-term position as PhD. employee for 3 years.

Must be eligible to work in the European Union to be considered for this position.
