PhD Student – Circuit breakers for renewable energy integration (m/f/d)
Your mission
Conduct literature reviews and technical analysis on medium-voltage circuit breakers (MV-CBs), focusing on renewable energy integration (e.g., solid-state/hybrid CB topologies, fault current limiting, and protection strategies)
Design and perform experiments to validate the performance of next-gen CBs (solid-state/hybrid), including drive unit optimization, dynamic response testing, and failure diagnostics
Perform multiphysics simulations (COMSOL, Siemens Simcenter) and CFD analysis to evaluate electro-thermal-mechanical behavior of CB geometries and optimize designs
Develop and test experimental circuits (e.g., gate drivers, snubber circuits, sensor interfaces) and functional modules in a lab environment
Publish research findings in high-impact journals and present at international conferences
Generate patents and technical reports to protect innovations and support commercialization
Maintain lab safety protocols, equipment logs, and calibration records in compliance with EHS standards
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (power electronics, materials, controls) for system-level validation and integration
Your areas of expertise
Master of Science (MSc) or equivalent degree in electrical engineering, power electronics, physics or related field
Hands‑on experience with PCB assembly (soldering, wiring) and basic lab equipment (multimeter, oscilloscope, current/voltage sensors)
Experience in working with current interruption experiments in MV/HV levels is preferred
Experience with discreet and modular power electronics components (e.g. MOSFET/IGBT device, gate driver) is desirable
Good working knowledge of one or more of the following software tools is advantageous: Python, PLECS, Modelica
Flexibility to learn new things and work in highly dynamic atmosphere
Excellent communication skills in English language; knowledge of German is an advantage
