Senior Research Engineer – Advanced Modeling (m/f/d)
Huawei Heisenberg Research Center (Munich) drives advanced research and innovation in next-generation communication technologies, combining system architecture, modeling, and strategic engineering to shape future products and contribute to industry direction and standards.
The Applied Network Technology Lab (ANTL) in Munich is expanding its research activities in next-generation Ethernet and high-speed interconnect technologies for data center networks. A key focus area is the physical layer (PHY), where increasing data rates introduce new challenges in signal integrity, non-linearities and system-level optimization.
We are seeking an experienced and innovative researcher to develop advanced modeling frameworks, analyze complex system behavior, and explore novel solutions for future physical layer designs.
Join the ANTL Ethernet Team as a:
Senior Research Engineer – Advanced Modeling (m/f/d)
Your mission
· Develop advanced behavioral and nonlinear models of PHY components and systems to capture real-world impairments thus improving prediction accuracy and reveal limitations beyond conventional assumptions.
· Investigate impact of non-ideal behavior such as – but not limited to – distortion, bandwidth limitations and memory effects on system performance and architectural choices.
· Explore and evaluate novel signal processing and compensation techniques informed by realistic system behavior.
· Generate insights into PHY design by identifying dominant impairments and quantifying their impact under realistic operating conditions.
· Propose and evaluate solution concepts at both architecture and block level to address identified limitations and bottlenecks.
· Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align advancements in network protocols with hardware development to ensure cohesive planning and innovation for next-generation solutions.
· Support and influence system architecture and standards discussions through deep, data-driven analysis of complex PHY behavior.
· Generate actionable insights that influence system architecture and technical positions in standards, e.g. IEEE and UEC.
· Engage with the global research community through leading conferences and collaborate with universities and research institutes to explore and shape future PHY concepts.
Your profile/areas of expertise
· Master’s and/or PhD degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or related area.
· Strong background in nonlinear systems, system modeling and signal processing.
· Experience with high-speed PHY and SerDes systems, including exposure to ≥100Gb/s per lane designs.
· Experience developing behavioral and/or system-level models using Python, Matlab or similar environments.
· Proven capability to analyze complex problems and translate them into viable solutions at both architecture and building-block level.
· Familiarity with high-speed data converters and their impact on system performance is a strong advantage.
· Experience in system identification and data-driven modeling is a plus.
· Strong analytical mindset with the ability to challenge assumptions and explore unconventional solutions.
· Full professional proficiency in English (both written and spoken). German and/or Chinese knowledge is an advantage.
